About ‘Design Sock’

Design Sock is a games designer. He wants to remain anonymous in case he says something nasty about something or someone and they read his blog and come over and beat him up.

Stopping the 3rd-person speak for a second. Basically, I wanted somewhere to yak on about the wonders and woes of working in the games industry, and if people want to read that then that’s pretty damn fun. Industry journals and so on can be found in lots of places, but I generally never have much of a clue what any of them are talking about. I got this job knowing very little about how games were really made, despite going to uni for 3 years to study Computer Games Design, so the accounts I’m giving on this blog are from someone who really is learning as he goes along. I know when I was still in uni I would have killed to talk to someone who could explain simply to me what it was actually like to work in games. Hopefully I can pass on some knowledge of that kind to some other poor sap.

    Hey,

I stumbled upon your blog after realising ‘Hey! I love games, and I love creative writing, why the hell haven’t I figured out before now that I could probably come up with a solid idea for a game?!’ and then Googling ‘game design for dummies’ on the grounds that I had literally no clue where to start (I studied film at uni, my experiences with the course/my effort levels were pretty much the same as your own).

First site I found was the ‘….For Dummies’ website which, amazingly, told me jack shit that I hadn’t already guessed, and then I found your blog. The stuff you’ve written is actually pretty interesting, and I’m wondering why you’ve not made another entry since last year?

Mostly I’d just really like to get into game design, even programming, but, as someone with zero experience outside of the hours I’ve logged just playing games, I need a little help getting started.

You should have my email address (says it’s ‘Required, hidden’, so someone’s definitely got it), if you can it’d be cool to hear from you!

    Cheers,
    Scott
